Video Shows Casual Racism Is Alive and Thriving in Australia
SYDNEY - A moving television ad campaign by Beyond Blue, The Invisible Discriminator, shows how prevalent racism is in Australia. Its message is to illustrate subtle or 'casual' racism against Indigenous Australians "Can be just as harmful as more overt forms". From not sitting next to a person on a bus through to an insensitive joke at the pub, this form of racism is rife in every part of local society and Beyond Blue want to make it clear it is unacceptable. One in five people actually admit they would move away if an Indigenous Australian sat next to them and half of Australians don't even realise this is an act of discrimination. Beyond Blue Chairman Jeff Kennett said in a statement it is time things started to change. "This research shows that racism in Australia is still common and that many people engage in racist behaviour. Racism, like any form of discrimination, leads to distress, which in turn can lead to depression and anxiety," he said. "We have launched this campaign to tell people that it doesn't matter if it's subtle or overt - racism is still racism and it ruins lives." Beyond Blue, a government-supported initiative, surveyed 1000 people across Australia between the ages of 25 to 44 years old.
