WikiLeaks Reveals Secret Suppression Order Involving International Figures
SYDNEY - On Wednesday, WikiLeaks published a document, which cannot legally be published in Australia. The suppressed Victorian Supreme Court suppression order, which appeared on the whistleblower's website, prevents the publication of details of a case and the names of international figures involved in the case. "With this order, the worst in living memory, the Australian government is not just gagging the Australian press, it is blindfolding the Australian public. This is not simply a question of the Australian government failing to give [this case] the public scrutiny it is due." Assange said the government should not be able to use the concept of 'national security' as "a blanket phrase to cover up" or block the release of information. WikiLeaks claims the last known suppression order of this level in 1995 was used by the Australian government to attempt to block publication in regards to a spy operation by joint U.S. and Australian intelligence at the Chinese Embassy in Canberra. Assange is currently taking refuge from authorities at the Embassy of Ecuador in London. He has resided there since 2012 when he was granted political asylum. Have something to add to this story?
