Author: Blathnaid Healy says leisure time has become a time of narcissism
LONDON - doesn't think we're using downtime correctly. "Everyone just wants to take fucking selfies at dinner on their time off. We went from being productive in times of leisure to being narcissistic," he told Mashable in an interview at Wayra - a London incubator for early-stage startups. Even though he's been harangued a few dozen times by selfie-taking entrepreneurs, he says he rarely instigates them. Sitting in the Wayra meeting room Thursday night, fresh from doing a fireside chat in front of this year's class of Wayra entrepreneurs, talked enthusiastically, a smartwatch on each wrist, his mouth sometimes not keeping up with his brain, about 2015, 2018, 2020 and beyond. This year has seen his attempts to transition from rapper, music producer, sometimes reality music show judge to entrepreneur. That bigger reason is his frustration that kids are not dreaming of being the next Dean Kamen or Bill Gates. "As big as the tech world is, a multi-trillion-dollar industry, kids in inner cities still dream of being Beyonce and Jay-Z, they're not dreaming of being Mark Zuckerbergs, or the other Mark from Zynga, or the other Marc from Salesforce," he said. "If you're Latino in east LA, you're not dreaming to be like Carlos Slim - the richest man in the world - for some reason you're still dreaming to be like Oscar De La Hoya.".
